KKP Wants to Collaborate with Luhut's Office to Overcome Barriers to Fisheries Exports to Europe

The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) reported a 1% increase in fisheries product exports during the first half of 2024, with the United States remaining the largest market. However, the European Union has shown the highest growth in demand. Despite this, non-tariff barriers are hindering exports to Europe. To address these challenges, the KKP plans to collaborate with the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs (Kemenkomarves). Hendra Yusran Siry, Advisor to the Minister for Marine Ecology and Resources, highlighted that fisheries exports reached USD 2.71 billion (approximately IDR 44.24 trillion) in the first half of 2024. Although exports to the United States totaled USD 889.39 million (IDR 14.4 trillion), showing a slight decline, other markets, such as China, ASEAN, and various other countries, experienced significant growth. Specifically, exports to China increased by 9% to USD 556.04 million, ASEAN by 16.5% to USD 353.93 million, and other countries by 6.4% to USD 436.14 million.

The European Union stands out as the region with the most substantial growth, with exports rising by 18.9% to USD 193.35 million (IDR 3.13 trillion). However, non-tariff barriers prevent the full potential of these exports from being realized. Hendra expressed optimism that overcoming these obstacles, particularly in entering the European market, could significantly boost export volumes and value. The KKP's strategy to enhance cooperation with Kemenkomarves aims to resolve these non-tariff issues, thereby unlocking greater market access and increasing Indonesia's fisheries export potential to Europe. This coordinated effort reflects Indonesia's broader goal of expanding its global market presence and maximizing the economic benefits from its fisheries sector.
