The Indonesian Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) has called on coconut-producing countries to focus on developing and implementing regulatory standards that promote a sustainable coconut industry and support a green economy. This initiative was highlighted at the 51st Cocotech Conference in Surabaya, East Java. Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, Director General of International Trade Negotiations at Kemendag, emphasized the need for synergy among coconut-producing nations to address shared challenges. The Cocotech Conference discussed the economic, social, and environmental utilization of the coconut sector, highlighting research and innovation efforts aimed at making significant breakthroughs. Djatmiko stressed that the development of the coconut sector requires supportive regulations from production to processing, alongside the backing of international bodies focused on enhancing coconut production through robust research and innovation. This approach aims to position coconut as a key renewable energy solution.
With rising demand for both food and non-food coconut products due to their quality and utility, there is a pressing need to advance research and innovation to maximize the potential of coconut in the renewable energy sector. Djatmiko noted that downstream development through research and innovation is essential for adding value to coconut products. He underscored the importance of investment in the renewable energy sector, positioning Indonesia as a leader in the global energy transition, leveraging coconut's potential for green energy needs. The 51st Cocotech, organized by the Ministry of Trade in collaboration with the International Coconut Community (ICC), served as a strategic platform for stakeholders to share the latest developments in research, innovation, and best practices in the coconut sector. The event also provided opportunities to build networks for global collaboration, supporting sustainable food and energy security.
