President Joko Widodo highlighted the significant economic potential of Indonesia's coconut industry, revealing that the country’s coconut exports have reached USD 1.55 billion, equivalent to IDR 25.1 trillion. Speaking at the 51st International Coconut Conference and Exhibition (Cocotech) in Surabaya, East Java, Jokowi emphasized the importance of leveraging this potential for the global green economy. "Our exports are not insignificant—USD 1.55 billion (IDR 25.1 trillion). This is a substantial figure that can be increased if we take the coconut industry seriously," Jokowi stated, as broadcasted on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel on 22 July 2024. He further elaborated that Indonesia has approximately 3.8 million hectares of coconut plantations, producing an average of 2.8 million tons. North Sulawesi and Riau are the leading provinces in coconut production. "This is a huge amount. As Dr. Jelfina, Executive Director of the International Coconut Community, mentioned, we are the world's second-largest producer," he said.
To enhance coconut production, Jokowi identified three key areas: the use of high-quality seeds, proper maintenance, and improved harvesting methods. He also stressed the importance of downstream technology to add value and create more jobs. "Research is crucial. We shouldn't have coconut trees reaching 20-30 meters in height. It's better if coconuts can be harvested from the ground and produce more fruit," Jokowi explained. Moreover, he highlighted the potential of coconut waste as a bioenergy source and the development of bioavtur, a biofuel for aviation. "Utilizing downstream technology is essential. I've seen coconut waste being turned into bioenergy, which is important for the future. We can develop this further, and coconuts can also become bioavtur. This is a major task to increase usage and appeal to other countries," Jokowi concluded. By focusing on these strategies, Indonesia aims to significantly boost its coconut industry, enhancing its global competitiveness and contribution to the green economy.
