Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN) is seen as a catalyst for new economic growth in Borneo, also known as Kalimantan. This perspective was shared by the Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Arsjad Rasjid, in Jakarta on Monday, July 22, 2024. Arsjad emphasized the importance of economic interconnectivity within Borneo. He stated that IKN is a part of the new growth not only for Indonesia but for the entire island of Borneo, which is shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. One of Kadin's efforts to support IKN is the creation of the Borneo Economic Community, established during the Borneo Business Roundtable in 2023. Arsjad noted that IKN represents a shift from a Java-centric to an Indonesia-centric development approach.
The establishment of IKN is also expected to promote the green economy, leveraging Kalimantan's abundant green economic resources. Arsjad highlighted the potential for developing eco-friendly data centers powered by hydro energy and positioning Indonesia as a potential exporter of green hydrogen. He stressed that IKN should be viewed not just as a capital city but as a driver for green and blue economic development. Arsjad added that these aspects are crucial for economic advancement. President Joko Widodo has signed Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 75 of 2024 on the Acceleration of Ibu Kota Nusantara Development. This regulation generally provides incentives for potential investors involved in developing services and facilities in IKN. The government is also offering incentives and business licensing facilities to entrepreneurs.
