Indonesia and Papua New Guinea Agree on Defense and Trade Cooperation

On Monday, July 15, 2024, Indonesian President Joko Widodo received Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape at the Presidential Palace in Bogor, West Java. The visit focused on bilateral cooperation, resulting in agreements in defense, transportation, trade, health, and education sectors. President Widodo emphasized the significance of the defense cooperation agreement for enhancing the security of both countries. He welcomed the second joint business forum and the signing of two memorandums of understanding for cross-border land transportation of passengers and goods, essential for boosting the economy and strengthening relationships between citizens at the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border. Discussions also continued on a preferential trade agreement to enhance bilateral trade, renewing the health cooperation agreement, and signing an education sector collaboration. The power grid development by PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) in the Skouw-Wutung border area was noted, with electricity now operational in Wutung.

Furthermore, President Widodo reiterated Indonesia's commitment to supporting Papua New Guinea's development through ongoing grant programs, such as hospital renovations in Port Moresby and public facility constructions in West Sepik. He highlighted Indonesia's previous assistance to Papua New Guinea for landslide victims, hoping it would alleviate the burden on affected residents. Widodo expressed appreciation for Papua New Guinea's continued support in enhancing cooperation with Pacific region countries. This state visit marks James Marape's second visit to Indonesia as Prime Minister, following his 2022 visit to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The meeting underscored Indonesia's dedication to assisting Papua New Guinea and enhancing regional ties.
