Statistics Indonesia Reports Increasing Trend in Indonesian Car Exports

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that sales of Indonesian-made cars in international markets are on an upward trend. Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, stated that commodities with Harmonized System (HS) codes 8702 and 8703 have shown significant export value growth over the past three years, contributing 2.4% to non-oil and gas exports from January to June 2024. Historically, from 2021 to 2023, Indonesia's car export value increased consistently, although the growth rate from January to June 2024 was slightly lower compared to the same period last year. In 2021, car exports were valued at USD 3.39 billion, rising to USD 5.57 billion in 2022, and further to USD 6.12 billion in 2023. For the January-June 2024 period, BPS recorded car exports at USD 2.78 billion.

Amalia highlighted that the key export destinations for Indonesian four-wheel vehicles from January to June 2024 were the Philippines (27.64%), Vietnam (16.17%), and Saudi Arabia (15.52%). The Philippines emerged as the main destination, accounting for 27.64% of Indonesia's total car export value, meaning roughly one in four cars exported from Indonesia were sent to the Philippines. Vehicles were also heavily exported to Vietnam and Saudi Arabia. Additionally, BPS reported that Indonesia's trade balance has maintained a surplus for 50 consecutive months since May 2020, with a surplus of USD 2.39 billion in June 2024. This surplus resulted from export transactions totaling USD 20.84 billion and imports amounting to USD 18.45 billion. Sector-wise, oil and gas exports in June 2024 were USD 1.23 billion, while non-oil and gas exports reached USD 19.06 billion. Oil and gas imports for the same period were USD 3.27 billion, with non-oil and gas imports at USD 15.2 billion.
