Industry 4.0 Transformation in Indonesia: Implementing Robotics and AI Technologies for a Sustainable Future

In the era of Industry 4.0, Indonesia is pushing for transformation across government, society, academia, and industries through the adoption of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI). To address global industrial challenges, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry launched the "Making Indonesia 4.0" policy in 2018. This initiative aims to facilitate a sustainable industrial ecosystem, particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recovery. Masrokhan, Head of the BPSDMI at the Ministry of Industry, highlighted that the implementation of this policy is essential for developing a skilled workforce adept in robotics, which is crucial for meeting future industrial needs. The adoption of 4.0 technologies is projected to enhance Indonesia's GDP growth by 1-2% annually from the baseline, generate over 10 million new jobs, and increase the manufacturing sector's contribution to GDP to 25% by 2030. The 4.0 Industrial Policy is also a Major Project within the RPJMN 2020-2024 framework, emphasizing its significance in national development.

To support this transformation, the Ministry has established the Indonesian Digital Industry Center 4.0 (PIDI 4.0), serving as a one-stop solution for implementing Industry 4.0 in the country. PIDI 4.0 provides five key services: an ecosystem for collaboration among industry stakeholders, a showcase center for demonstrating Industry 4.0 applications, a capability center for training and certification, a delivery center for support and consulting, and an engineering and AI center for research and testing. Recently, PIDI 4.0 hosted the International Robotic Symposium, organized by the Indonesia Robotic Association in partnership with RoReC Singapore and RoReC Indonesia. This event brought together policymakers, industry representatives, and investors to discuss sustainability and strategies for decarbonization through robotics and AI. Masrokhan emphasized the need for active stakeholder participation in accelerating Indonesia's 4.0 industrial transformation, aiming to position the country among the top 10 global economies by 2030 and the top 5 by 2045.
