Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Indonesia (CCEP Indonesia) is championing the circular economy by transforming waste banks. Lucia Karina, Director of Public Affairs, Communications, and Sustainability at CCEP Indonesia, emphasized the crucial role of waste banks in promoting waste sorting behavior, creating economic value, empowering women, and establishing a gender-equitable social order. However, challenges such as fluctuating prices of recycled materials, operational scaling hurdles, and inadequate waste management infrastructure hinder their optimal operation and longevity. To address these issues, CCEP Indonesia has initiated several innovative measures to support the transformation of waste banks. These initiatives include management and business skills training, technical assistance for operational efficiency, development of value-added recycled products, opening new markets for recycled goods, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. "CCEP Indonesia also integrates technological advancements and digitalization to aid in the transformation of waste banks," said Karina.
A notable example of CCEP Indonesia's support is in Kota Metro, Lampung Province. Through a synergistic collaboration, the Metro Lampung Waste Bank has implemented sustainable city-level waste management practices. Programs include guaranteed partnerships for purchasing PET plastic packaging, intensive management and entrepreneurship training, development of value-added recycled products, digitalization of waste banks, and assistance with access to financial institutions and education. "The results of this program are significant. The Metro Lampung Waste Bank now oversees around 22 units and serves approximately 1,600 households in Kota Metro," Karina explained. CCEP Indonesia's efforts aim to enhance the resilience and effectiveness of waste banks, contributing to the broader goal of sustainable development and circular economy in Indonesia.
