Fisheries Ministry Launches Downstream Processing at PIT Modeling Sites

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has initiated downstream processing at pilot sites for measurable fish capture (PIT) in Tual, Maluku. This policy integrates upstream (fishing) and downstream (processing and marketing) activities to boost the economy in producing regions by enhancing efficiency and effectiveness from fish capture to marketing, thereby generating a multiplier effect on local economic growth. "In line with our duties and functions, we (PDSPKP) are initiating the strengthening of downstream processing and competitiveness in the implementation of PIT modeling," said Budi Sulistiyo, Director-General of Strengthening Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products at KKP, in a written statement received in Jakarta on Monday. Budi reported that as of June 2024, 30.6 tons of fish, equivalent to two containers of Layang and Deho fish, were shipped to Java. Quality checks revealed that the shipment consisted of 46.67% grade A and 45.62% grade B fish, with only 7.71% having ruptured bellies. "This shows an improvement in fish quality compared to when fishermen directly landed their catch in Java, where the rate of damaged fish could exceed 30%," he explained.

The improvement in fish quality is attributed to distance, time, and cooling facilities during transportation. Since the inauguration of PIT modeling, KKP has taken various measures such as providing technical guidance and assistance to fishermen on proper fish capture and handling on board. Budi ensured that his team has facilitated cooperation between fish owners (fishermen) and cold storage owners as well as fish processing units (UPI). Additionally, they have coordinated with shipping lines and container providers to consolidate cargo according to capacity requirements, ensuring transport from Tual to industrial areas and consumers in Java or directly to export markets. In terms of marketing, efforts are made to meet market access requirements through promotions and business meetings with buyers in export destination countries. KKP also continues to provide technical guidance on good processing practices and fish quality handling for fish processing units, including enhancing the competence of local employees. This comprehensive approach aims to create a sustainable and competitive fishery sector, contributing significantly to Indonesia’s economy.
