The cultivation of vannamei shrimp in Bima Regency shows significant potential as a new economic income source. With a vast demand in international export markets, this commodity stands as one of the most valuable, with potential profits reaching IDR 8 billion per hectare. Acting Head of the Fisheries Department of Bima Regency, M. Natsir, revealed that the international market for vannamei shrimp shows a high demand. He explained that requests for vannamei shrimp from Bima Regency come from various countries, including the United States, Japan, and China, with prices around IDR 85,000 per kilogram. "Vannamei shrimp is an export commodity directly shipped to America, Japan, and China. Its prospects are enormous," he stated on Tuesday (2/7/2024). The production potential of vannamei shrimp in Bima Regency can reach 100 tons per hectare per cultivation cycle. Given the current market price, the revenue potential from one hectare of pond can reach IDR 8 billion.

However, Natsir noted that the current actual production ranges between 30 to 40 tons per hectare. "Currently, shrimp pond production is at 30-40 tons per hectare. In four months, one person can earn IDR 4 billion from one hectare," said Natsir, who also serves as the Head of the Food Security Agency of Bima Regency. Additionally, Natsir mentioned that the government remains focused on corn as the primary commodity. However, he believes that vannamei shrimp is more valuable and far more profitable than corn. "For comparison, from one hectare of corn, the income is only around IDR 6-7 million. But the investment cost of vannamei shrimp farming is very high," Natsir explained. This includes costs for pond construction, seed provision, feed, as well as water management and shrimp health technology. Bima Regency has the potential to become one of the significant vannamei shrimp production centers in Indonesia. The development of this sector is expected to enhance local economic welfare and strengthen Bima Regency's position in the international seafood export market.
