The Indonesian government plans to impose import duties ranging from 100% to 200% on certain goods, including footwear and ceramics, as part of efforts to protect domestic industries, announced Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan on Friday, June 28th. Zulkifli Hasan emphasized that the average tariff on these goods would exceed 100%. He expressed concerns that a flood of imports could potentially collapse local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).Last year, the government issued regulations to tighten supervision over more than 3,000 imported goods, spanning from foodstuffs to electronics and chemicals. However, these rules were rescinded after domestic industries argued that they hindered the flow of necessary imported materials. The implementation of import duties is imminent for footwear, clothing, textiles, cosmetics, and ceramics, according to Zulkifli. Meanwhile, Indonesia significantly imports its clothing and accessories from China, Vietnam, and Bangladesh, according to the Central Statistics Agency.
