Ministry of Maritime Affairs Outlines Strategies to Boost Tuna Product Competitiveness

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) is working to enhance the competitiveness of Indonesian tuna products through several strategies, including quality assurance and safety measures and strengthening bilateral relations through negotiations. These efforts aim to increase the quantity and added value of fishery products. "The strategies to enhance the competitiveness of Indonesian tuna products include ensuring the quality and safety of the tuna produced, developing tuna products, understanding the requirements and tariffs imposed by purchasing countries, and strengthening bilateral relations through negotiations," stated Budi Sulistiyo, Director General of Product Competitiveness Strengthening at KKP, in a written statement in Jakarta on Wednesday. Budi highlighted that tuna is a flagship export commodity for Indonesia, with its economic value rising annually. In 2023, Indonesia's tuna exports reached USD 927.13 million, reflecting an average annual growth rate of 6.1% over the past five years. The primary export destinations are the United States, ASEAN, Japan, the Middle East, and the European Union.

Indonesian tuna, skipjack, and bonito exports are mainly in the form of boneless fillets, contributing 39.4% of the total, followed by air-tight packaged tuna at 28.7%, and non-air-tight packaged tuna at 7.4%. "Indonesian tuna has significant competitiveness and potential for development in the market. Therefore, enhancing this competitiveness must be a continuous effort," Budi added. He explained that KKP is highly focused on these strategies to minimize the rejection rates of Indonesian tuna in export markets. "We are very focused on these competitiveness enhancement strategies to ensure domestic products are of high quality and to prevent the rejection of tuna products in export destinations," he said. In summary, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is implementing comprehensive strategies to boost the competitiveness of Indonesian tuna products. This includes ensuring product quality and safety, understanding market requirements, and fostering international relations, all aimed at increasing the export value and market acceptance of Indonesian tuna.
