Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan announced that the discussions on the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU CEPA) are nearing completion. He stated that the negotiations are approximately 90% finished and are expected to conclude this year. "Under President's direction, the IEU CEPA, which has been ongoing for eight years, is now almost 90% complete," Zulkifli Hasan said after a meeting with President Joko Widodo at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, 25 June 2024. "A 19th meeting is planned for next month in Indonesia, which should finalize the agreement," he added. Besides the IEU CEPA, Zulkifli mentioned that the economic cooperation between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is also close to completion. "Similarly, with Eurasia, only a few items remain to be resolved," he noted.

Previously, Indonesia and the European Union agreed on 11 out of 21 issues during the 18th round of IEU-CEPA negotiations. Deputy for Coordination of International Economic Cooperation at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Edi Prio Pambudi, mentioned that in the recent round, 11 issues were successfully negotiated. "In the previous round, eight issues were discussed. Recently, we have successfully negotiated 11 issues," Edi stated during a media briefing on 'Indonesia's Leadership Role in International Economic Cooperation' in Jakarta on Thursday, 31 May 2024. The agreed issues include Customs and Trade Facilitation, Trade Solutions, Economic Cooperation and Capacity Building, Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures, Small and Medium Enterprises, Dispute Settlement, Institutional and Final Provisions (IFP), and Transparency. Other topics covered Good Regulatory Practices and Sustainable Food Systems (SFS). Edi revealed that at least 10 issues remain unresolved. It is hoped that all outstanding issues will be agreed upon during the 19th round of IEU-CEPA negotiations scheduled for this month.
