A new regulation within the recently approved Infrastructure Decree (Dl infrastrutture) has officially established the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Committee. This committee will identify areas for carbon dioxide storage, assess exploration requests, and prescribe health protection measures. The announcement was made by Deputy Minister for the Environment and Energy Security, Vannia Gava. Gava highlighted that CCS is currently the only immediately available option to reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as cement plants and chemical factories, which cannot be electrified, as well as in industries like paper production, where a significant portion of emissions is tied to the industrial process. The CCS Committee's establishment marks a significant step in Italy's efforts to combat climate change. The committee's responsibilities include evaluating potential storage sites, scrutinizing exploration proposals, and ensuring that all activities comply with health and safety regulations. This initiative is part of Italy's broader strategy to meet its emission reduction targets and transition to a more sustainable energy system. Gava emphasized the critical role of CCS in addressing emissions from industries that are challenging to decarbonize.
