Summer Surge: Italy Anticipates 75.6 Million Overnight Stays, EUR 18 Billion in July Tourism

Italy anticipates a robust tourism season in July 2024, with projections indicating 18.2 million arrivals and 75.6 million overnight stays in hotels and vacation rentals, marking a 1.5% and 1% increase respectively from July 2023. Foreign tourists are expected to reach nearly 10 million, up by 3.6% compared to the previous year, comprising 54.8% of total arrivals with 38.8 million overnight stays, a 2% increase from 2023. This surge in international visitors is poised to drive tourist spending to approximately USD 17.9 billion in July, reflecting a 3.2% rise year-on-year. Hotel occupancy stands at 51%, representing a 5.5% increase for the season compared to 2023, with an average nightly rate of EUR 160, up by 5.5% year-over-year.


Italy will host around 4,000 events throughout the summer, including concerts, festivals, conferences, and sports events, expected to attract a total of 28 million attendees. Local festivals and village fairs anticipate a substantial increase of 63.8% in attendance compared to 2023, highlighting their growing popularity. Enit, the National Tourism Agency, predicts about 1.6 million airport passengers from June to September 2024, with 82.7% arriving from abroad. This period forecasts a 4% rise in Italian travelers compared to the same timeframe in 2023, led by over 285,000 passengers from the US. For destinations, Italians are expected to favor Rimini, Riccione, Sardinia, and Puglia, while international tourists show preferences for Taormina, Cefalù, the Amalfi Coast, Lake Garda, and Lake Como, notably attracting German visitors. Overall, the outlook underscores Italy's resilience and appeal as a premier tourism destination, poised for a vibrant summer season amid evolving travel dynamics and international visitor preferences.
