Indonesian Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, has opened doors for Chinese automotive industry players to enhance exports of locally produced electric vehicles (EVs). Four companies—Wuling, Chery, Neta, and Sokonindo—are poised to increase production volumes and expand export destinations from their Indonesian plants. Minister Agus also urges Chinese automakers to engage local component manufacturers comprehensively to establish Indonesia as a complete production chain hub. He supports these companies in leveraging investment incentives provided by the Indonesian government. In May 2024, PT Neta Auto Manufacturing Indonesia produced the Neta V-II with a local content level (TKDN) of 40%, aiming to raise it to 60% by 2025, targeting annual sales of 10,000 units.
During a meeting with SAIC GM Wuling Automobile Company, Agus praised their performance in exporting EVs to 11 countries, positioning Indonesia as the largest automotive production facility outside China. "The Indonesian government expects Wuling to explore expanding export markets, especially for electric vehicles, to solidify Indonesia's position as an EV production base in ASEAN and globally," stated Agus in an official statement on Tuesday, 18 June 2024. The four Chinese EV manufacturers operating or planning production in Indonesia have disclosed their production capacities: Sokonindo at 50,000 units, SGMW or Wuling at 120,000 units, Chery planning 8,000 units, and Neta targeting 9,300 units through their manufacturing facilities. This initiative underscores Indonesia's strategic push towards becoming a key player in the electric vehicle sector, leveraging foreign investment and enhancing local manufacturing capabilities to support its economic growth goals.
