Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs, Teten Masduki, highlighted the significant market potential of Indonesia's ornamental fish industry. In 2022, Indonesia's ornamental fish exports reached USD 36.4 million, placing the country among the top five global exporters. Specifically, Indonesia ranks third for freshwater ornamental fish and fourth for marine ornamental fish worldwide. "Out of 1,100 species of freshwater ornamental fish globally, 400 species are native to Indonesia. The most renowned species include the Super Red Arowana and Botia," Teten stated in a written statement on Monday, 10 June 2024. Recognizing this potential, Teten urged small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the ornamental fish sector to develop a stronger and more innovative ecosystem. SMEs play a crucial role in this industry, with a total of 21,091 ornamental fish breeders in Indonesia. West Java stands out as the province with the highest number of ornamental fish breeders.
Furthermore, global demand for ornamental fish is steadily increasing each year. The global market value has surpassed USD 360 million, with an annual demand growth rate exceeding 4%. "Around 55% of the global ornamental fish market supply comes from Asia, including Indonesia," Teten Masduki added. Given this upward trend, the Indonesian government is committed to supporting SMEs in the ornamental fish industry, aiming to enhance their global competitiveness and market reach. This support is seen as crucial to maintaining and expanding Indonesia's leading position in the international ornamental fish market.
