The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is inviting investors to participate in the development of bauxite processing and refining facilities (smelters) in Indonesia. To date, progress in constructing domestic bauxite smelters has been inadequate. ESDM Minister Arifin Tasrif stated that the government has long encouraged bauxite entrepreneurs to build smelters, but significant results remain elusive, with some sites still undeveloped. To accelerate this initiative, Minister Arifin urges bauxite entrepreneurs to form consortia to realize smelter projects. "We are now seeking those who can support mining operations nearby. We are open to foreign investors," Arifin said at the Directorate General of Oil and Gas building, quoted on Monday, 10 June 2024. Previously, Arifin revealed that out of the planned 12 domestic bauxite smelters, only four are operational. The remaining eight projects are still under construction. Field inspections have shown discrepancies between independent verifiers' reports and actual progress. Despite reports indicating construction progress between 32% and 66%, seven of the eight smelter sites remain undeveloped. Arifin disclosed these findings during a working meeting with Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Wednesday, 24 May 2023.
