Strengthening Hong Kong-Indonesia Economic Ties through Media Information Exchange

Hong Kong stands as Indonesia's second-largest investor post-Singapore, underscoring the significance of nurturing robust investment and economic ties. Yang Yong, Bauhinia Magazine's leader in Hong Kong, highlighted the pivotal role of media relations during a visit to Jakarta's Kompas Tower on June 8, 2024. He stressed the importance of information exchange between both regions, praising Kompas and its media group for their role in disseminating information to the Indonesian public. Similarly, Hong Kong media, though smaller in readership, serve as vital references for policymakers in Beijing and Hong Kong. With Hong Kong entrepreneurs seeking expansion opportunities in Indonesia and vice versa, fostering business information exchange is paramount. Additionally, Indonesian businesses have notable prospects in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, a key economic hub in China. Leaders from Hong Kong media, including Tsui San Ying and Clement Yeung, joined the discourse, emphasizing the frequent coverage of Indonesia in official Hong Kong media, often relying on Indonesian diplomatic missions for insights.

Hong Kong, with 7.4 million residents, hosts around 66,000 Indonesian migrant workers, with active Indonesian diaspora communities in areas like Causeway Bay. It serves as a crucial international gateway to China, being part of the Greater Bay Area with a substantial GDP. Richard Li Zhi Ming of Bauhinia stressed the mutual benefits of economic and cultural ties, noting Hong Kong's understanding of local markets alongside Kompas' expertise in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Andy Budiman and Tri Agung Kristanto of Kompas Gramedia welcomed the Hong Kong delegation, expressing readiness for mutually beneficial cooperation. Kompas Gramedia's diverse business entities align with Hong Kong's trade events and tourism activities. The event concluded with a cultural exchange at the Bentara Budaya Jakarta art gallery, symbolizing the potential for deeper bilateral connections.
