The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) reported that Indonesia's ornamental fish exports reached USD 39.06 million throughout 2023, equivalent to IDR 634.9 billion (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 16,255 per USD). Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fisheries Products, Budi Sulistyo, stated that this achievement positioned Indonesia as the world's second-largest ornamental fish exporter. "Indonesia is now ranked second in the world as an ornamental fish exporter, following Japan. This is a significant accomplishment; two or three years ago, we were in the top five," Budi remarked at the KKP office in Jakarta, Thursday, 6 June 2024. "We have consistently risen, and last year, in 2023, we reached second place. The economic value was USD 39.06 million, with a global market share of 11.14%." The most sought-after ornamental fish species include arowana, betta, koi, goldfish, and other freshwater varieties.
China emerged as the top destination for Indonesia’s ornamental fish exports, with exports reaching USD 11.84 million in 2023. The European Union followed with USD 4.81 million, the United States with USD 4.72 million, ASEAN countries at USD 4.09 million, and Japan at USD 3.53 million. Budi highlighted that the global ornamental fish market was valued at USD 350.5 million last year and is expected to grow further. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate to boost national production and export performance of ornamental fish. "This progress motivates us to aim for the number one spot globally in the near future. It requires collective efforts from KKP, associations, and the private sector," Budi explained. "Such efforts will not only increase foreign exchange but also create business opportunities. Ornamental fish businesses are predominantly SMEs, presenting a significant opportunity for us." Budi concluded by emphasizing the importance of joint efforts to enhance the competitiveness and market reach of Indonesia’s ornamental fish industry.
