Foreign Ministry Supports Indonesian Fisheries Entrepreneurs in Expanding Export Markets

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducted a training session to enhance Indonesian entrepreneurs' understanding of international fisheries trade, including potential export markets. Held in Jakarta from 4-6 June 2024, this training is part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Economic Cooperation and Capacity Building (MoU ECCB) under the Indonesia-EFTA Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-EFTA CEPA). “These training sessions also demonstrate the government’s commitment to increasing the utilization of I-EFTA CEPA,” said Afina Burhanuddin, Acting Coordinator for EFTA Functions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a press release on Wednesday, 5 June 2024. The event was a collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Norwegian Government, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the EFTA Secretariat, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and Infofish.

The training focused on various aspects of international fisheries trade, including international trade instruments for fisheries, preferential access for fisheries and aquaculture products, market access, and the legality of fisheries products. Besides improving the understanding and skills of Indonesia’s competent authorities and business communities, the training served as a platform for discussing the dynamics and developments in international fisheries and aquaculture trade. Participants included relevant ministries and agencies as well as seven associations of fisheries business actors: APIKI (Indonesian Fish Canning Association), AP5I (Association of Indonesian Fisheries Producers, Processors, and Marketers), APRI (Indonesian Crab Processing Association), AP2HI (Indonesian Pole & Line and Handline Fisheries Association), ASTUIN (Indonesian Tuna Association), INOFE (Indonesian Ornamental Fish Exporters Association), and ADI (Indonesian Demersal Association). The I-EFTA CEPA is a comprehensive economic partnership agreement between Indonesia and four EFTA countries: Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland. Since its implementation on 1 November 2021, the trade value between the parties has steadily increased: USD 2.3 billion (2021), USD 3.19 billion (2022), and USD 3.77 billion (2023).
