In April 2024, Indonesia experienced a notable increase in foreign tourist arrivals, reaching 1.07 million visits, marking a 2.41% rise from March 2024 and a substantial 23.23% increase compared to April of the previous year. The majority of visitors hailed from Malaysia, Australia, and China. Cumulatively, from January to April 2024, foreign tourist visits surged by 24.85% compared to the same period in 2023, with significant increases observed at Ngurah Rai-Bali Airport and Soekarno Hatta-Banten Airport. Domestic tourism also saw a significant rise, with 756,020 trips recorded in April 2024, reflecting a 9.28% increase from March 2024 and a notable 33.13% increase from April of the previous year. Malaysia remained the top destination for domestic tourists, followed by Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and China.
The hotel industry showed positive growth, with star-rated hotel room occupancy rates reaching 47.14% and non-star-rated hotels at 26.21% in April 2024, both experiencing increases compared to the previous year. Despite the growth, the average length of stay in star-rated hotels remained consistent at 1.63 nights. This surge in tourist numbers indicates a robust recovery for Indonesia's tourism sector, especially compared to the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020. Cumulatively, from January to April 2024, foreign tourist visits reached 4.10 million, surpassing the figures recorded during the pandemic's onset in 2020. Foreign tourist arrivals predominantly utilized air transportation, with Ngurah Rai Airport and Soekarno Hatta Airport serving as primary entry points. In sea transportation, Batam Port and Tanjung Uban were the main entry points, while land transportation saw significant increases in visits, particularly at entry points like Atambua, Lintas Batas Jayapura, and Entikong. Overall, Indonesia's tourism industry demonstrates a strong resurgence in 2024, driven by increasing numbers of both foreign and domestic tourists, reflecting positive growth and recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
