Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman, along with Acting Governor of Gorontalo Rudy Salahuddin, flagged off the first export of 50,000 tons of corn to the Philippines. “This is extraordinary. Just five months ago, we imported 250,000 tons of corn, and today we are exporting 50,000 tons to the Philippines,” said Minister Amran during the export event in Anggrek, Gorontalo Utara, on Wednesday, 22 May 2024. He emphasized that this export marks a significant achievement in Gorontalo’s agricultural sector, particularly in corn production. Gorontalo has also supplied 264,000 tons of corn to various regions in Indonesia. Minister Amran highlighted the government's efforts to boost export volumes and productivity in Gorontalo, targeting the province as a model for rapid agricultural growth and farmer welfare. The goal for next year is to increase production from 1.5 million tons to over 2 million tons, supported by seed assistance for 100,000 hectares. “With the outstanding efforts of the people of Gorontalo, I am confident we can achieve this target and enhance our international reputation,” he added.
Agriculture, according to Minister Amran, is a strategic sector for improving national welfare and economic stability. The long-term vision is to achieve self-sufficiency and establish Indonesia as a global food hub. “We have achieved self-sufficiency three times before. This year, we aim to elevate Indonesia to a global food producer with improved programs,” he stated. Acting Governor Rudy Salahuddin praised the efforts of farmers and the Ministry of Agriculture, noting a 52.8% increase in corn production, positioning Gorontalo to significantly contribute to national needs. The province aims to cultivate 356,000 hectares, producing 1.5 million tons, up from 1 million tons last year. Rudy also mentioned the recent inter-island shipment of 264,000 tons and the export of 50,000 tons worth IDR 209 billion. Deputy Speaker of the House, Rachmat Gobel, who attended the event, supported the government’s initiatives, highlighting Gorontalo’s transformation from a poor region to a prosperous one. He also acknowledged the strategic importance of the Bulango Ulu Dam in enhancing agricultural productivity.
