The Indonesian traditional herbal medicine, known as "jamu," plays a vital role in tourism and creative economic resilience, prompting efforts to enhance its utilization. Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, emphasized the positive contribution of jamu to both tourism and creative economic resilience, advocating for its increased utilization. During the National Jamu Day 2024 event in Jakarta on Monday (27/5), Sandiaga highlighted jamu as an Indonesian cultural heritage, recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) during the 18th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Botswana on December 6, 2023. Collaborating with the Indonesian Jamu Council (DJI), the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy aims to expand the use of jamu in tourism and among young generations. Sandiaga stressed the importance of preserving this healthy cultural tradition for the future.
The Ministry, through its Special Interest Tourism Directorate, continues to promote jamu as part of wellness tourism, envisioning Indonesia as a leading destination for wellness tourism and a global producer of competitive health products. Highlighting Indonesia's potential in wellness tourism, Itok Parikesit, Director of Special Interest Tourism at the Ministry, underscored the significance of jamu in the sector, emphasizing its role in enhancing tourism and the creative economy. With jamu representing a significant component of wellness tourism, the government, through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, is actively promoting jamu internationally, recognizing its dual benefits for economic prosperity and public health. This concerted effort aims not only to preserve jamu as a cultural heritage but also to leverage its economic and health benefits, solidifying its position as a national treasure with global appeal.
