Indonesia Begins Electricity Exports to Papua New Guinea

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, held a bilateral meeting with Papua New Guinea's Deputy Prime Minister, John Rosso, showcasing Indonesia's electricity export initiative to Papua New Guinea. Luhut highlighted that PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara) fulfilled President Joko Widodo's directive to supply electricity to Papua New Guinea by 17 August 2023. He detailed that PLN has constructed 88 power poles along Wutung Village, a border village in Papua New Guinea. This initiative follows President Jokowi's bilateral visit with Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, James Marape, in June 2023. "Besides fulfilling this directive, we also need to consider further plans for electricity supply between the two countries," Luhut stated on Tuesday, 21 May 2024.

During his meeting with John Rosso, Luhut discussed potential and ongoing cooperation between the two nations in the downstream industry sector. John Rosso expressed that the close relationship between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia has motivated his country to pursue downstream industry efforts. He emphasized Papua New Guinea's desire to learn from Indonesia's success in this area. "We see Indonesia as successful in implementing downstream industry programs, and we are motivated to learn directly from Indonesian experts," said John Rosso. Both nations have established a Joint Task Force to collaborate on technical and non-technical aspects, ensuring effective cooperation.
