Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Angela Tanoesoedibjo is working to strengthen the culinary industry ecosystem through the flagship program "FoodStartup Indonesia." The program aims to advance Indonesia's culinary industry and enhance its global recognition. Speaking at the "Unleashing F&B Potential Sayembarasa Roadshow'' event at Artotel TS Suites, Surabaya, on Monday, May 20, 2024, Angela emphasized that SMEs are the backbone of Indonesia's economy, contributing 61% of the national GDP and absorbing 97% of the workforce. She highlighted that the culinary sector is a favorite among both SMEs and tourists. "We need to mature the ecosystem, not only to thrive domestically but also globally. That is our hope," Angela said.
Since its inception in 2016, "FoodStartup Indonesia'' has benefited over 500 SMEs. Participants receive a series of training and mentoring sessions, networking opportunities, business negotiations, and access to financing. "The target for 'FoodStartup Indonesia' in 2024 is to fund around USD 16.5 million. I believe we can all elevate our status, but the key is a willingness to innovate and work hard," Angela stated. To ensure the success of "FoodStartup Indonesia," the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy collaborates with Wahyoo Ventures, which has a similar program called Sayembarasa. Sayembarasa shares the vision and mission of empowering culinary SMEs and seeks to identify and nurture talented culinary entrepreneurs in the country. Peter Shearer, CEO & Founder of Wahyoo Ventures, explained that Wahyoo Ventures selects 100 SMEs to participate in the "Unleashing F&B Potential Sayembarasa Roadshow," aiming to discover the best talents in the culinary field. "Indonesia should not only be known worldwide for its natural beauty but also for its delicious cuisine," Peter concluded.
