Blue Economy to Drive Indonesia's Future Economic Growth

The National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) has highlighted that the Blue Economy can become a new engine for Indonesia's economic growth. Minister of National Development Planning and Head of Bappenas, Suharso Monoarfa, stated that implementing the Blue Economy can stimulate various industries, particularly in the maritime sector. Indonesia has substantial assets in the maritime sector, which is a key component of the Blue Economy. According to the Indonesia Blue Economy Roadmap 2023-2045, the government aims to increase the maritime sector's contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP) to 15% by 2045, up from the current 7.6%. Suharso emphasized that with 17,000 islands connected by the sea, 65% of its territory being ocean, and a strategic position on international shipping routes, Indonesia has significant potential for Blue Economy development. Speaking at a Parallel Event of the World Water Forum 2024 in Tanjung Benoa Nusa Dua, Bali, on Sunday, Suharso highlighted the advantages of the Blue Economy for Indonesia, given that the majority of its territory consists of water. He noted that Indonesia is on track to implement the Blue Economy and achieve the target of 10% Marine Protected Areas (MPA) by 2030. Beyond maximizing the maritime potential, the development of the Blue Economy is expected to positively impact various industries, including fisheries, marine-based industries, trade, transportation, logistics, and tourism.

The Blue Economy also fosters new industries such as renewable energy, biotechnology, bioeconomy, research, and education. Reflecting the theme of the World Water Forum 2024, Suharso stressed that Bappenas adheres to three main pillars: social inclusivity, industrial inclusivity, and territorial inclusivity. These pillars guide policy-making to ensure that the benefits of innovation are effectively distributed among the population and stakeholders. Suharso expressed hope that the World Water Forum 2024 would facilitate discussions on Blue Economy issues and policies among leaders and ministers. Acting Governor of Bali, Mahendra Jaya Wisata, remarked that the Blue Economy aligns with Bali's economic activities, particularly in tourism, which is the cornerstone of the island's economy. He hopes that the development of the Blue Economy and the World Water Forum 2024 will further explore and enhance the potential of the Blue Economy, allowing for diversification of tourism areas and the preservation of Bali's marine ecosystem.
