Indonesia Plans to Import Live Cattle from New Zealand

The Ministry of Trade is advocating for a collaboration in importing live cattle from New Zealand to meet the demand for beef in Indonesia. This effort was discussed in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, where Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan (Zulhas) emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation with countries producing quality cattle, such as New Zealand. In a bilateral meeting with New Zealand's Minister for Development and Construction, Chris Penk, Zulhas stated that trade cooperation with New Zealand is crucial, considering the country's role as a producer of beef and milk. New Zealand has responded positively to Indonesia's request and is committed to following Indonesia's domestic regulations regarding the import of live cattle.
The APEC forum is deemed important by Zulhas because APEC Economic Member Countries represent 38% of the global population, 48% of global trade, and 62% of the world's total GDP. Despite a 11.2% decrease in Indonesia's exports to APEC member economies in 2023 compared to the previous year, Indonesia's total trade with APEC Economies still reached USD 358.6 billion in that year. This underscores the significance of regional trade cooperation efforts in enhancing the import of live cattle from partner countries like New Zealand.
