The Kampung Nelayan Modern (Kalamo) in Biak, Papua, is preparing to export tuna directly to various countries. This initiative, driven by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), follows a cooperation agreement signed by the Samber Binyeri Cooperative, PT Perikanan Nusantara Jaya, PT PINDAD International Logistik (PIL), and PT Pelindo. "Kalamo Biak is showing significant progress and is preparing for tuna product export," stated Budi Sulistiyo, Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fisheries Products (PDSPKP), in a written statement on May 13, 2024. Budi revealed that Samudra Ulam is constructing a tuna fillet processing facility under the brand "Nusa Tuna," with a capacity of 300 tons per month, set to start operations in June 2024. Furthermore, PT PINDAD International Logistik (PIL) and PT Pelindo have agreed to use port area land for a Fish Processing Unit (UPI). The UPI's development is part of a partnership between Ditjen PDSPKP, PT Pindad International Logistik, and a synergy between PT Pindad and PT Pelindo.Budi assured that the UPI would adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) during the fish landing process at Pelindo Port, within the operational area of Pandoi Fisheries Port.
The UPI will feature facilities for sorting, weighing, cleaning, packaging, administration, and stuffing, with a processing capacity of 750 tons per week. Additional facilities include a receiving warehouse with a capacity of 200 tons, 100 plugging container yards, 100 empty container yards, and a 1-megawatt electricity supply. Services for docking, unloading, and shipping will also be available. The initial product handling target includes fish from 43 nationally licensed fishing vessels and one regionally licensed vessel, to be shipped to Surabaya and Jakarta using container ships from Pelindo 4 Biak regional port. "The processes at the UPI will include sorting, grading, weighing, packaging, and container stuffing," Budi explained. The collaboration at Kalamo involves 11 business partners, including state-owned enterprises and private companies. The ground-breaking ceremony on May 11, 2024, was attended by the Acting Regent of Biak, the CEO of PIL Pindad, the General Manager of Pelindo Regional IV Biak, and the Director General of PDSPKP. Previously, the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, transformed the traditional fishing village into a modern settlement with facilities to enhance productivity and community competence.
