The Bamboo Global Market Report 2024 details the significant growth in the global bamboo market, which reached USD 70.59 billion (approximately IDR 1,132 trillion) in 2023 and is projected to grow to USD 75.12 billion (IDR 1,205 trillion) in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4%. This growth is driven by increased environmental awareness, climate change mitigation efforts, versatile applications, and government support. Indonesia, with its rich bamboo biodiversity, plays a crucial role in this market. The country is home to 176 of the world's 1,620 bamboo species, with 105 species being endemic. Bamboo is integral to Indonesian culture and economy, used in construction, household items, musical instruments, and crafts. Beyond its economic uses, bamboo aids in land restoration, water storage, carbon absorption, and provides renewable energy sources like bamboo charcoal, bioethanol, and biomass energy. The Indonesian government, recognizing bamboo's potential, is developing a roadmap for the bamboo industry. According to Setia Diarta, Director of Forest and Plantation Product Industry, this roadmap aims to establish a strong legal framework, support national bamboo institutions, ensure sustainable raw material supplies, enhance technological skills of industry practitioners, and promote continuous innovation. The goal is to make Indonesian bamboo products competitive in both local and global markets and to increase public awareness of bamboo's economic and environmental benefits.
However, challenges remain, including limited technology, industry structure issues, and raw material availability. Indonesia currently lags behind China, which dominates 70% of the global bamboo market, while Indonesia contributes only 1%. To address these issues, the government is considering using social forest lands for bamboo cultivation in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Developing Indonesia's bamboo industry requires significant government support, including land provision, industry development, human resource enhancement, and capital investment. In summary, developing Indonesia's bamboo industry offers substantial business opportunities and supports a sustainable future. With a solid roadmap and strong support, Indonesia can become a global leader in the bamboo industry, similar to China. Diversifying bamboo products will be key to expanding market opportunities and enhancing industry competitiveness.
