Total investment in AI in Indonesia reaches IDR 120.1 trillion throughout 2023

Nezar Patria, the Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), disclosed that Indonesia has garnered funding related to artificial intelligence (AI) for the period 2022-2023, totaling USD 7.5 billion (IDR 120.1 trillion). Indonesia ranks second in Southeast Asia, following Singapore, in terms of AI funding, Nezar stated, as reported by Bisnis on Tuesday (07/05/2024). Various sectors stand to benefit from artificial intelligence (AI), including information and communication, financial services and insurance, government and defense, trade and mining, and agriculture. To this end, the government, through Kominfo, is preparing new regulations concerning AI to establish a more comprehensive legal framework for its implementation domestically. The drafting process of these regulations will involve industry players, academics, and the public. Additionally, Kominfo is collaborating with UNESCO and the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) to develop a legal framework for the ethical use of AI in accordance with global standards.

These regulations are expected to be completed before October 2024, aiming for issuance before the presidential transition, and will take the form of ministerial regulations (Permen) or presidential regulations (Perpres). Microsoft has previously announced significant investments in AI and cloud computing infrastructure in Indonesia, along with the development of 840,000 digital talents over four years, amounting to USD 1.7 billion (IDR 27.6 trillion), as revealed at the end of April 2024. Moreover, Nvidia and PT Indosat Ooredo Hutchison have jointly established an AI center in Solo, Central Java, in early April 2024, adding to the growing initiatives in AI development within Indonesia.
