Gas industry is a vital supporting sector for the development of manufacturing industries in Indonesia, with a current production capacity of 2.5 million tons per year, capable of meeting approximately 1.4 million tons per year of domestic gas demand. Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, expressed appreciation for the Indonesian Industrial Gas Association (AGII), which has been active since 1972 and oversees approximately 189 industrial gas producers. The demand for industrial gas includes oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and other gases, with various applications in hospitals, small industries, workshops, as well as steel and stainless steel production. Agus highlighted the crucial role of the gas industry in meeting oxygen needs during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring a much-needed supply for the public. During the pandemic, important lessons were learned, including the need for robust infrastructure to support the manufacturing sector. The Minister also acknowledged the remarkable contribution of industrial gas producers during the pandemic and emphasized the need for better gas supply infrastructure to ensure national resilience.
Challenges and opportunities faced by industrial gas producers include improving process efficiency and readiness of technology and infrastructure. The development of new energy sources such as hydrogen and green ammonia is seen as a strategy towards achieving the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target for the industry by 2050. AGII is committed to supporting the sustainability of the national industry towards the vision of Indonesia Emas 2045. AGII's congress and seminar aim to stimulate collaboration between the government, industry, and academia in addressing global climate change challenges and environmental preservation, as well as directing strategic steps for the development of Indonesia's gas industry towards a greener and more sustainable future.
