The Papua Provincial Government made its inaugural cocoa bean export of 10 tons, produced by local farmers, on Monday, May 6, 2024. The cocoa beans were shipped through Jayapura Port destined for Olam Food Ingredients in Surabaya, East Java. Acting Secretary of Papua, Derek Hegemur, symbolically flagged off the inaugural export. Derek stated that this debut export showcases the successful development of the cocoa program in Papua. He affirmed the government's commitment to continually drive programs enhancing community productivity, such as cocoa cultivation. This cocoa bean export marks a collaborative effort between the central and regional governments, alongside the vital role played by farmers. It serves as a significant motivation for both the government and the farmers. Derek emphasized the pivotal role of this flagship commodity in boosting the regional economy, thereby positively impacting community welfare. He expressed hopes that this debut cocoa bean export would uplift the farmers' livelihoods.
Furthermore, Derek affirmed the government's ongoing efforts to boost the production of other promising market commodities, including vanilla, coconut, sago, and palm oil. This endeavor entails implementing precise and integrated development programs spanning from upstream to downstream sectors, aiming to add value to plantations and producing regions. Meanwhile, M.P Koibur, Acting Head of the Papua Provincial Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Office, pledged to facilitate the expansion of cocoa plantations in Papua. He expressed optimism that other agricultural commodities like coffee and coconut would soon follow suit in export activities. Reflecting on today's cocoa bean export, Koibur hailed it as remarkable, expressing hopes that it would ignite enthusiasm among local farmers to further develop cocoa production.
