The Provincial Government of Papua, through its Department of Plantation and Animal Husbandry, highlights the broad export opportunities for sago, encouraging increased cultivation due to the vast land area available, totaling 5.3 million hectares. Acting Head of the Department, MP Koibur, emphasizes Papua's high-quality sago, grown in the wild forest, making it easily accessible. Besides cocoa beans, Papua's agricultural sector also features coffee, vanilla, timber, and oil palm as potential export commodities. Efforts are underway to boost production of these key commodities to facilitate exports.
Specifically, there are plans to expand sago tree cultivation to increase its availability for exportation. With two sago-producing regions in Papua Province, namely Jayapura Regency and Jayapura City, continuity in supplying local specialty commodities is vital. The collaboration between the local government and PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Pelni) in Jayapura ensures robust support for exports. The well-equipped storage facilities on Pelni's vessels facilitate efficient export operations, further contributing to the region's economic growth. In a recent development, a shipment of 10 tons of cocoa beans was exported via Jayapura Port to Olam Food Ingredients in Surabaya, East Java, demonstrating ongoing efforts to diversify export products and expand economic opportunities in Papua.
