The port in Nipah Panjang District, Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency, has emerged as a beacon for Indonesia's export activities, becoming the sole port in the region facilitating direct exports abroad. This strategic move aims to enhance maritime connectivity and bolster the local economy, particularly benefiting coconut farmers. Since July 2023, the Tanjung Jabung Timur Regency government, in collaboration with the provincial government, businesses, and relevant agencies such as Jambi Customs, Agricultural Quarantine, Port Health Office, Immigration, and Port Authority, has initiated export operations. Irwanto, Head of Transportation in Tanjab Timur, stated, "Export activities occur two to three times per week, marking a significant step towards improving the welfare of farmers and local businesses." Previously, coconut products had to be transported and gathered in Guntung, Indragiri Hilir Regency, before being exported.
With the direct operation of the port from Nipah Panjang, the export process has become more efficient and cost-effective. Irwanto emphasized that this connectivity not only facilitates coconut shipments but also has the potential to stimulate the local economy. Furthermore, he expressed hopes that this success will not only be limited to coconuts but also encourage downstreaming of other agricultural products in Nipah Panjang District and its surroundings. He concluded, "Hopefully, in the future, the Nipah Panjang port can generate other products for export, thereby expanding our local economy's diversification." This initiative is expected to serve as a model for maritime economic development in other regions of Indonesia, particularly in improving the welfare of farmers and businesses in remote areas.
