Seizing Economic Opportunities in the Development of the Nusantara Capital

The Department of Development Geography, Faculty of Geography, UGM, recently hosted the 100th edition of the Sustainable Development Goals Seminar Series (SDG’s Seminar Series) on Monday, April 29th. The theme of the seminar was "Capturing the Economic Opportunities of the Future Capital City of Indonesia". This aligns with the pillars of the SDGs, focusing on economic development such as Goal 8 "Decent Work and Economic Growth", Goal 9 "Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure", Goal 10 "Reduced Inequality", and environmental development like Goal 11 "Sustainable Cities and Communities". The seminar was held both offline at the Merapi Auditorium, Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and online via Zoom meeting, live YouTube, and Instagram live report. The speakers for this edition were Dr. M. Ir. H. Fitriansyah, S.T., M.M. (East Kalimantan Regional Research and Innovation Agency) and Prof. Dr. R. Rijanta, M.Sc. (Professor of Development Geography Department, Faculty of Geography, UGM). The seminar was moderated by Alia Fajarwati, S.Si., M.IDEA. (Coordinator of Community Development Courses, Faculty of Geography, UGM). The seminar was hosted by Dr. Erlis Saputra, M. Si. (Chair of Development Geography Department, Faculty of Geography, UGM). The seminar was opened by Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko, S.Si., M.Sc. (Dean of the Faculty of Geography, UGM).

Dr. M. Ir. H. Fitriansyah, S.T., M.M. presented insights into capturing the economic opportunities of the future capital city of Indonesia. The relocation of the capital city to IKN is based on several advantages, including minimal natural disaster risk, a strategic location in the middle of Indonesia and along the Indonesian Archipelago Sea Lane (ALKI) II, relatively complete infrastructure, and proximity to two supporting cities, Balikpapan and Samarinda. There are six economic clusters in IKN, namely clean technology industry cluster, ecotourism cluster, integrated pharmaceutical cluster, sustainable agricultural industry cluster, low-carbon energy cluster, and chemical and chemical derivative products cluster. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. R. Rijanta, M.Sc. discussed the economic prospects of IKN from a socio-spatial perspective. There are ten economic opportunities for the development of the new city, including property development, infrastructure development, job opportunities, business and entrepreneurship development, industrial clusters and special economic zones, education and research institutions, tourism and hospitality, healthcare services, green technology and sustainability, and supply chain and logistics. The economic prospects in IKN depend on stakeholders' capacity to integrate IKN and the hinterland in Kalimantan as a single system while reducing dependency on external systems.
