The Ministry of Industry Cooperates with Dekranas to Boost Weaving Craftsmen in the City of Ambon

The Ministry of Industry is actively promoting the development of traditional handicraft and textile industries, particularly the woven fabric sector, to preserve Indonesia's cultural heritage. In collaboration with the National Crafts Council (Dekranas), the Ministry is facilitating the acquisition of specialized weaving machines and providing mentoring programs. This initiative, led by the Directorate General of Small, Medium, and Miscellaneous Industry (IKMA), involves cooperation with the Maluku Provincial Government, Ambon City Government, and local Dekranasda in Maluku Province and Ambon City. According to Loemongga Agus Gumiwang, Deputy Chairperson 1 of Dekranas, the woven fabric industry, notably in Ambon City, plays a crucial role in preserving cultural potential. Maluku Province hosts 3,016 artisans organized into 233 groups, reflecting the significance of the industry in the region. Loemongga stresses the importance of leveraging this textile potential for community welfare, contributing to the national economy. To enhance competitiveness in the face of business competition, SMEs are urged to develop their products. Recognizing resource constraints faced by SMEs, Dekranas and the Ministry of Industry collaborate to provide assistance in product development and machinery facilitation.

Reni Yanita, representing Dekranas, inaugurated the mentoring and machinery facilitation activities in Ambon City as part of the National Crafts Council's 44th Anniversary Celebration. The activities, conducted in two stages, encompass assistance in natural dye dipping, motif, and design development, followed by monitoring and evaluation. Similar initiatives have been undertaken in other regions, such as Padang Sidempuan City, North Sumatra, indicating a nationwide effort to boost the weaving industry's capacity. The Ministry anticipates positive impacts on economic competitiveness, envisioning improved artisan capacity to meet market demands and enhance the value of woven products. These efforts aim to benefit both artisans and regional economies. The comprehensive strategy underscores the government's commitment to preserving cultural heritage while fostering economic growth through the development of traditional industries. By supporting SMEs and facilitating access to resources, the Ministry seeks to sustainably elevate the weaving sector's contribution to Indonesia's economy.
