Camper Registrations Up by 16.5% Since Start of Year in Italy, Third Largest Producer in Europe. Parma Exhibition Returns

Italian camper van manufacturers such as Arca, CI, Elnagh, Etrusco, Giottiline, Laika, McLouis, Mobilvetta, Rimor, Roller Team, Top Group, and XGO are thriving in the industry, making Italy the third-largest producer of campers in Europe, following Germany and France. The German market absorbs 80% of Italy's national camper van exports, with key players headquartered there, exerting control over some Italian companies. Italy, where outdoor tourism plays an increasingly pivotal role, sees a significant uptick in new vehicle registrations, up 16.5% in the first quarter of the year and nearly 25% between September and February, compared to a mere 6.9% in the EU. In the first quarter of 2024, Italy experienced an 11.6% increase in camper van registrations, contrasting with a mere 2.3% rise in the opening two months of the year across Europe. Stellantis, with its various brands, holds significant interests in the camper van segment, notably operating out of its Abruzzo plant in Atessa, producing Fiat Professional, Citroen, Opel/Vauxhall, Peugeot, and Toyota models.

The year 2023 marked a record for "open-air" tourism in Italy, with €6 billion in revenue, 11 million arrivals, and 70 million overnight stays, according to both the National Tourism Agency (Enit) and the International Center for Tourism Economics Studies (Ciset). Those opting for this form of vacation show a higher spending propensity, averaging €1,918 compared to the average of €1,575. Destigmatizing seasonality is a key goal for this type of tourism, appealing particularly to the 35-54 age group and extending the operational period for tourism facilities. The Parma Exhibition Center serves as Italy's national hub for the camper van sector, hosting the country's second-largest exhibition. Its 15th edition, slated for September 14-22, follows the success of last year, attracting over 300 exhibitors, including 54 camper van manufacturers showcasing over 600 models, and drawing in 100,000 visitors. Antonio Cellie, CEO of Fiere di Parma, emphasizes the exhibition's broader significance, transcending mere vehicle showcases to illuminate travel philosophy.
