In January 2024, the export performance of crude palm oil (CPO) reached 2.802 million tons, marking a 14.63% increase from December 2023, as reported by the Indonesian Palm Oil Entrepreneurs Association (GAPKI) on Friday, March 29, 2024. GAPKI's Executive Director, Mukti Sardjono, stated that CPO exports experienced a significant surge, escalating by 80.47%, from 192,000 tons in December 2023 to 347,000 tons in January 2024.The highest nominal increase in exports was noted in shipments to the European Union, rising by 104.52% from 180,000 tons in December 2023 to 368,000 tons in January 2024. Furthermore, exports to Pakistan surged by 110.91% to 284,000 tons, and shipments to Africa increased by 44.33% to 347,000 tons. Meanwhile, exports to India rose from 93,000 tons to 527,000 tons, marking a significant uptick. Contrastingly, China, a major importer of palm oil globally, recorded a decline in imports from Indonesia in January 2024. CPO exports to China plummeted by 34.02%, while shipments to the United States decreased by 35.27%.

The total export value in January 2024 amounted to USD 2.304 billion, a 10.63% increase from December 2023. This increase was attributed not only to volume but also to the rise in the average CPO price from USD 944 to USD 958 per ton CIF Rotterdam. On the production front, CPO production in January 2024 rose by 5.91% compared to December 2023, reaching 4.232 million tons. Similarly, palm kernel oil (PKO) production was estimated to increase by approximately 5.91%, from 380,000 tons to 402,000 tons in January 2024. This production surge was due to optimized harvesting post the December holidays. However, domestic CPO consumption in January 2024 experienced a slight decline of 2.64% compared to December 2023, totaling 1.942 million tons. Mukti attributed this decrease to seasonal factors such as the Christmas holidays and year-end vacations in December.
