Ministry of Industry Encourages Development of Metal-Based Kitchen Equipment Industry

The Ministry of Industry is driving the development of metal-based kitchen equipment industries to enhance economic value and foster sustainable effects for the nation's economic competitiveness. Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated in Jakarta on Tuesday that domestically produced metal-based kitchen products such as gas stoves, cookware, utensils, and dishwashing sinks are expected to dominate the market. To achieve this, various policies are being implemented, including setting minimum quality standards and product quality through the mandatory application of Indonesian National Standards (SNI). One such SNI implementation is in the gas stove industry, with Indonesia currently hosting 31 gas stove companies with a production capacity of 33.7 million units annually. The gas stove industry comprises household gas stoves, where mandatory SNI has been in place since 2013 and 2015. Discussions are underway for the enactment of mandatory SNI for commercial gas stoves, awaiting harmonization processes at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.

Furthermore, efforts are underway to accelerate the development of local components in the industry. Currently, drafts of Ministry of Industry regulations for mandatory SNI regarding cookware and utensils are undergoing discussions with implementation targeted for 2024. The average domestic component level (TKDN) ranges from 40-85%. Minister Agus expressed hopes that these supportive domestic industry policies will maintain a conducive business and investment climate, fostering continued growth in domestic industries. Moreover, the development of metal-based kitchen equipment industries is seen as a means to further enhance the performance of the metal industry. Steel industry productivity has been on the rise since 2020, with national steel consumption estimated to reach 18.3 million tons this year, growing by 5.2% following consumption trends post-COVID-19. In 2023, the basic metal industry and non-machine metal goods industries recorded annual growth rates of 14.17% and 23.63%, respectively. Safeguarding these trends is crucial to maintaining a favorable industrial business climate, attracting investments, and fostering import substitution. Through appropriate policies, the Ministry of Industry strives to enhance competitiveness and revenue growth in the national metal industry.
