The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported a total of 1.04 million foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in February 2024, marking an 11.67% increase compared to January 2024. Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, stated in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday (1/4/2024) that this surge followed a decline in tourist numbers in January 2024. Amalia highlighted that the increase in foreign tourist arrivals in February 2024 also showed significant growth compared to the same period in 2023, with a year-on-year increase of 38.24%. However, she noted that these figures still fell significantly short of pre-COVID-19 levels, citing February 2019's record of 1.24 million foreign tourist visits.
The rise in foreign tourist arrivals signifies the recovery of Indonesia's tourism sector post-pandemic, according to Amalia. Cumulatively from January to February 2024, foreign tourist arrivals reached 1.96 million, representing a 26.87% increase compared to the same period last year. Amalia further disclosed that the majority of tourists came from Malaysia, totaling 214 thousand, followed by Singapore with 112 thousand, China with 105 thousand, and Australia with 101 thousand visitors. On average, these tourists stayed in Indonesia for 7.10 nights. Among ASEAN tourists, the shortest average stay was recorded at 3.57 nights, while tourists from Africa were found to stay the longest in Indonesia, averaging 15.92 nights per visit.
