The Tariff-Proportional Tourist Tax: FI's Plan for Tourism

Forza Italia Senate group leader, Maurizio Gasparri, presented a resolution to reform the tourist tax during a session with category representatives. The resolution, approved by the Finance Committee in the Senate a month ago, was discussed at a conference titled "Towards Fairer Tourism: Changing the Tourist Tax" at Palazzo Madama. The meeting aimed to introduce the resolution to the audience and address disparities in tax proportions, burdens on operators, and municipal investments in tourism. The solutions proposed in Forza Italia's resolution, already approved in the Senate Finance Committee, include gradually proportional tax rates based on the tariff rather than the category, updating the collection system using digital platforms, and ideally increasing investment in the tourism sector. Gasparri emphasized the need for a revised criterion, advocating for the tax to be proportionate to the hotel tariff rather than its category.

Regarding the resolution's point involving category participation in revenue allocation, Gasparri emphasized the potential use of tourist tax for urban beautification and hospitality. Gasparri also addressed ongoing debates concerning bed and breakfast apartments, suggesting the need for regulations balancing individual freedom with industry rules. Senator Claudio Lotito deemed the current tourist tax regulation outdated, emphasizing the importance of sectoral fund allocation. Carlo De Romanis, Forza Italia's National Tourism Coordinator, highlighted the resolution as a starting point for reform, acknowledging positive feedback from industry federations. He stressed the need to support the tourism industry, rectify sectoral imbalances, and streamline administrative procedures to enhance competitiveness. De Romanis affirmed Forza Italia's commitment to accelerating this process to ensure the sector's increased competitiveness.
