A few weeks ago, the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), in collaboration with Oxford Economics, released data indicating that Italy ranks third in terms of tourism value in Europe, following France and Germany. Spain is closely trailing Italy, poised to overtake its position. Magda Antonioli, a professor at Bocconi University in Milan and vice president of the European Travel Commission, explains that the research considers direct, indirect, and induced aspects, encompassing not only tourism but also related sectors such as accommodation, transportation, F&B, cultural activities, sports, and entertainment. According to the latest data from the National Tourism Agency (ENIT), developed in collaboration with Eurostat, Italy ranks second in terms of international (and total) arrivals in Europe from January to December 2023.
Looking ahead to 2025, Italy is projected to maintain its second position. Post-COVID, Italy has rebounded remarkably, returning to pre-pandemic levels and experiencing significant growth, particularly in foreign arrivals and stays. Foreign tourism in Italy appears more impactful during spring months and in September and October, while domestic tourism peaks during the summer holidays. Analysis reveals a substantial growth in smaller towns and urban areas, indicating a preference shift among tourists towards peripheral destinations. Italy's recovery post-COVID has been commendable, with the country remaining a model for Americans, particularly in fashion and gastronomy. Culture continues to be a key driver for Italian tourism, with luxury tourism witnessing significant growth in recent years. Foreign investments in Italy have increased, with acquisitions of hotel chains and hotel refurbishments being notable examples. Despite Germany having the highest turnover in the tourism sector, according to WTTC estimates, it ranks fourth in terms of total overnight stays in 2023, behind France, Italy, and Spain. Spain surpasses Italy in international overnight stays, indicating a competitive landscape. However, Italy's position in the European tourism sector remains strong, with positive forecasts for the future.
