The global landscape is witnessing a massive surge in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. Projections indicate that by 2030, AI's contribution to the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will reach a staggering USD 3 trillion. Of this total, an estimated USD 1 trillion is expected to originate from Southeast Asian nations. Indonesia, in particular, is poised to contribute significantly, with a projected value of USD 366 billion or approximately IDR 5,765 trillion. Revealing these insights at the Tech & Telco Summit 2023 hosted by CNBC Indonesia, Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi, emphasized the immense opportunities the future holds for AI sector development. Minister Budi Arie highlighted the potential of AI in automating customer service for enhanced efficiency. Citing an example, he noted that in 2022, numerous companies saved up to USD 11 trillion through the adoption of AI-based chatbots.
Furthermore, Minister Budi Arie underscored AI's role in detecting and preventing cyber fraud, positioning it as a catalyst for environmental sustainability by reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. Despite these promising prospects, he acknowledged the challenges in fully realizing AI's benefits, including a shortage of skills and appropriate resources, difficulties integrating AI with existing systems, concerns about security, and a culture that may not fully support innovation. Addressing regulatory aspects, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology has issued a Circular Letter (SE) providing guidelines for ethical and secure AI development in both private and public sectors. Minister Budi Arie specifically highlighted that the SE on AI encourages telecom companies to implement AI in an ethical and responsible manner. In conclusion, while AI presents remarkable opportunities, there are challenges to be overcome, and regulatory frameworks are being put in place to ensure responsible and ethical AI deployment in Indonesia.
