Reducing Environmental Impact, Indonesia - Korea Shares Experiences in Implementing Circular Economy

Indonesia and Korea are collaboratively exchanging information, experiences, and best practices in implementing a circular economy. Haznan Abimanyu, Head of Energy and Manufacturing Research Organization at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), highlighted the circular economy's core principle of maximizing resource value while minimizing waste and environmental impact. Currently, Indonesia employs a linear economic model, which, although effective in maximizing short-term results, is considered unsustainable in the long run due to its "take-make-dispose" approach. The circular economy concept focuses on efficient use of natural resources, transforming waste into resources, and redesigning products for reuse or recycling. The goal is to achieve sustainable economic growth, reduce negative environmental impacts, and enhance the quality of life for communities. Haznan emphasized that circular economy practices offer an appealing alternative – a regenerative system where resources are utilized, reused, and regenerated, rather than being discarded after a single use.

To achieve this, Haznan stressed the importance of leveraging knowledge and innovation. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a comprehensive method providing insights into a product or service's environmental impact throughout its life cycle, from raw material extraction to disposal or recycling. Integrating LCA insights into sustainable production systems, beyond technological advancements, requires cross-sector collaboration and stakeholder engagement. The collaboration between Indonesia and Korea aims to advance sustainability in the circular economy through research and development. The joint efforts of BRIN and the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics & Trade (KIET) signify a commitment to sustainable industrial models and life cycle assessment in sectors related to chemistry. The incorporation of circular economy principles into green industries is seen as part of the broader shift towards green practices driven by climate change, resource scarcity, and sustainability initiatives. The news emphasizes the critical role of circular economy practices in achieving environmental sustainability and fostering international collaboration in this domain.
