Semen Indonesia Intensifies Use of EBT in Factories

PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (SIG) is intensifying the adoption of Renewable Energy (EBT) across its operations as part of its sustainability strategy to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. Subsidiary PT Solusi Bangun Indonesia Tbk (SBI) is contributing to this initiative by utilizing solar energy as an environmentally friendly alternative in its Tuban Plant in East Java. SBI's geographical location in Tuban, with solar irradiance averaging around 5.4 kWh/m2/day, presents significant potential for solar energy utilization, surpassing the national average. SBI has collaborated with PT Energi Mitra Indika Tenaga Surya to develop a On-Grid Connected Rooftop PV System, with a capacity of 6.39 MWp spread across ten rooftops. This solar power system will operate in parallel with the existing electricity from PLN, supporting operational needs in SBI's Tuban Plant, including offices and other supporting facilities. The solar panel installation has been completed on the main office building, with nine more buildings set to follow.

Lilik Unggul, CEO of SBI, emphasizes that alongside using alternative fuels to substitute coal in cement production, eco-friendly product enhancement, and improving the efficiency of electricity and thermal energy use, the utilization of solar energy is a concrete manifestation of their commitment to sustainable development. This project aligns with SIG's commitment to decarbonization, supporting the government's target of reducing GRK emission intensity by 23.9% by 2030 (baseline 2019), as outlined in SIG's Sustainability Road Map. Corporate Secretary of SIG, Vita Mahreyni, notes that the solar panel installation at SBI's Tuban Plant reinforces SIG's commitment to the energy transition towards environmentally friendly EBT. The initiative is expected to be fully operational in Q3 2024, contributing to the increased use of EBT and helping achieve SIG's sustainability targets. In an effort to accelerate the reduction of GHG emission intensity, SIG has also partnered with PT PLN (Persero) in developing Renewable Energy Power Plants since September 2023, supporting SIG's transition to green energy sources for its operational areas.
