Tourism in Italy: a Business Turnover of 84 Billion Euros

During the ongoing Bit Tourism Fair in Milan, the National Tourism Agency (ENIT) presented sector statistics, indicating a market return to pre-pandemic levels with promising prospects for 2024. With a thousand exhibitors from 66 countries, ENIT utilized ISTAT data to assess the sector's performance. From January to November, over 412 million overnight stays were recorded in accommodation facilities, marking a 4.4% increase compared to 2022. Foreign tourists totaled 215 million, showing a 10.6% annual increase, surpassing Italian visitors, which decreased by 1.5% from 2022 and 4% from 2019.

Notably, inbound visitors spend an average of 68 euros per day, while domestic tourists spend 62 euros. Including stays in private homes, ENIT estimates a total of 851 million stays, contributing to an economic return of 84 billion euros. The sector's value has returned to its 2019 levels, a record year for Italian tourism. Forecasts suggest a highly positive outlook for 2024, with 40% of rooms already booked for March and April. Venice, Florence, and Rome maintain top positions as preferred destinations among global tourists. Additionally, gastronomy and craftsmanship emerge as increasingly influential factors for marketing and market positioning, particularly for international visitors. The presentation underscores Italy's resilience in the tourism sector, portraying a promising trajectory for recovery and growth amidst ongoing global challenges.
