Expanding Export Markets, Indonesia Showcases Local Medical Devices at Arab Health 2024

The Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenperin RI) is facilitating 16 Indonesian medical device companies to participate in the international event Arab Health 2024. The event, scheduled to take place at the Dubai World Trade Center from January 29th to February 1st, presents a significant opportunity for Indonesia's medical device industry to expand its export market to various United Arab Emirates (UAE) countries. Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industry (ILMATE) at the Ministry of Industry, Taufiek Bawazier, expressed hope that this opportunity would be maximized to promote high-quality domestically manufactured medical devices, ultimately boosting national manufacturing industry growth and the economy. Arab Health is renowned as the world's largest healthcare exhibition, held for 48 years in Dubai. Last year, it attracted over 110,000 visitors from 180 countries, with 3,600 participants engaged in conferences and business forums. Taufiek emphasized the ministry's commitment to enhancing domestically produced medical devices to become Indonesia's flagship export products, competitive globally due to their considerable potential for international marketing.

The medical device industry is a prioritized development sector according to the Making Indonesia 4.0 roadmap. Taufiek revealed that Indonesia's domestic medical device industry is supported by 150 companies affiliated with the Indonesian Medical Equipment Manufacturers Association (ASPAKI). "These domestic industries are capable of producing quality medical devices such as ventilators with a Domestic Component Level (TKDN) reaching 58%, hospital furniture (TKDN 68%), and medical apparel (TKDN 92%)," he explained. Kemenperin RI is ready to drive the domestic medical device industry to produce high-tech products such as electromedic devices, orthopedic implants, and radiological devices. To achieve this target, Taufiek outlined several steps including ensuring raw material availability, technology mastery and innovation, and developing medical device research and development to create a research-based medical device ecosystem. Additionally, to enhance the competitiveness and technology of the domestic medical device industry, Kemenperin RI actively develops the Medical Device Center of Excellence (CoE) in Yogyakarta by fostering collaboration between universities and industries in research and development of innovative medical devices.
