Increased Jewelry Exports in East Java for December 2023

The Central Statistics Agency of East Java (BPS Jatim) has reported a rise in jewelry or gemstone (HS 71) exports in December and throughout 2023. Additionally, copper is a primary commodity exported from East Java, primarily in the form of cathodes and cathode parts. According to the East Java Central Statistics Agency (BPS Jatim) website on Monday (15/1/2024), Debora Sulistya Rini, Senior Statistician Expert at BPS Jatim, explained that the government continues to provide an opportunity for holders of Mining Business Permits (IUP) or Special Mining Business Permits (IUPK) for metallic minerals, particularly for five commodities, to sell their processed mineral products abroad until May 2024. "The export relaxation is limited to copper, iron, lead, zinc, and anode sludge from copper refining," she stated.

The planned export ban starting May 2024 must also be anticipated promptly, considering that the copper smelter of PT Freeport Indonesia, located in the Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE) special economic zone in Gresik, is set to commence operations in May 2024. It is expected to reach its full capacity gradually by December 2024. The main export destinations for jewelry from East Java include Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. HS 15 (Animal/Vegetable Fats and Oils) is one of East Java's leading export commodities, mostly exported in the form of palm oil and shortening. The primary export destinations for HS 15 are China, Malaysia, and Nigeria. HS 15 regained its status as a leading export commodity after the government reopened the cooking oil export valve on May 23, 2022.
