Indonesia's Economic Diplomacy Achievements: 27 Trade Agreements and Strategic Investment Projects

In her annual press statement, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi outlines the achievements based on priorities set during President Joko Widodo's 10-year tenure. Notably, economic diplomacy stands out as a focus, demonstrating concrete outcomes amidst challenging circumstances. For trade, Indonesia's global trade volume surpassed USD 355 billion in 2014, reaching over USD 439 billion from January to November 2023, a nearly 24% increase with a surplus exceeding USD 33 billion. In terms of investment, foreign investment realization was USD 28.5 billion in 2014, rising over 32% to surpass USD 37 billion from January to September 2023. To enhance market access and reduce trade barriers, Indonesia concluded 27 trade and economic agreements, including PTAs, FTAs, CEPA, and RCEP, involving nations like South Korea, Australia, Mozambique, the UAE, and Chile. Additionally, protocols for agricultural and fisheries products were settled. Diplomatic initiatives were taken to strengthen economic partnerships globally, with Indonesia hosting forums such as Indonesia-Africa Forum and Indonesia-Africa Infrastructure Dialogue for Africa, Indonesia-Latin America and the Caribbean Business Forum for the Americas, Indonesia-Europe Business Forum for Europe, and others.

In collaboration with Africa, President Jokowi's visits resulted in 33 agreements worth over USD 4 billion, showcasing Indonesia's commitment. Economic diplomacy extended to various regions and organizations, including the UN, G20, and ASEAN, involving both state-owned enterprises (BUMN) and the private sector. Specific achievements include Indonesia's initiation of the UN resolution designating 2021 as the International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development, as well as concrete deliverables in G20, such as 361 projects worth over USD 71 billion, and ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum generating 93 cooperation projects valued at over USD 38.2 billion in 2023. Economic diplomacy also translated into strategic investments in Indonesia, such as the development of Patimban Port, MRT Jakarta Phase 2 with Japan, Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Train with China, and the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant with the UAE. Facilitating private sector involvement, initiatives spanned from oil exploration in Tanzania and Mozambique to introducing Indonesian household products in Mongolia and establishing a rendang factory in Bulgaria. Addressing health diplomacy, Indonesia actively secured over 516 million COVID-19 vaccine doses domestically, with 26.5% donated through international cooperation. As the Co-Chair of COVAX AMC Engagement Group, Indonesia advocated for equitable vaccine access, with COVAX Facility distributing 1.97 billion doses to 146 countries.
